The best places to celebrate Halloween in Europe

While Americans have been the last weeks thinking about what costume would be more original than last year's and are recovering from last night party, in Europe a lot of people may not even know that today is Halloween. Surprisingly, it is supposed to have Celtic roots. Although Halloween is not that popular in Europe, there are a bunch of destinations if you want to experience this holiday in the 'old continent'.

French Halloween
In Chalindrey, located in the Champagne-Ardenne region, there has been held for more or less 100 years a Witch Festival (Fête des Sorcières). It is linked to the witch trials of the 16th an 17th century. The event involves scary movies, exhibits and Celtic dance during the whole night.

If you are in Paris and you prefer to celebrate Halloween as in the U.S., you should head to Disneyland Park where Mickey and Minnie will surely receive you with Halloween parades, fireworks and lots of pumpkins around.


Limoges has the biggest Halloween celebrations in France. People go from all around the country because of the parade of creatures carrying candlelit pumpkins.

You should know thay in France costumes are more traditional (vampires, ghosts, and witches) rather than the latest pop or movie stars.

Halloween with the Queen
Several scary attractions are in London where you should definitely go, mostly in Halloween. Among the options you can fin London Dungeons, The Tower of London, a Ghost Walk or the Halloween themed pubs and clubs.
You can also experience Ghost walks in York. Furthermore, you can visit haunted castles and other buildings, there is also a Halloween festival at York Maze, with a haunted hayride and children can pick out pumpkins to carve.

Green Halloween
Derry, Ireland, hosts once a year a Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival. This involves pumpking carving, ghost stories and a unique spooky pirate cruise down the Foyle. The main events are a parade, fireworks, and costume parties.
In Baligally the most famous haunted places in the country, can be found. In the Baligally castle resides the ghost of Isabella Shaw who knocks guests' doors during the night.

Finally, if you are a Twilight fan, you should definitely visit Transylvania, where the most representative vampire was born. Lost of tours are offered that will take through the trace of the Count.
